 Outcome C2: model real-world phenomena using exponential functions

To find a equation out of a word problem you use y=ab^x/c+d

               a= starting x value (normally starting price)

                          b= common ratio between term 2 and term 1 (term2/term1)

               c= the amount it takes to get from term 1 to term 2 (term 2- term1)

               d= horizontal asomtote

Sample Question:

Round all final answers to 2 decimal places and write answers using a word equation.

 In 1990 Tony baught a Calgary Flames jersey for $40.47.  In 1995 the same jersey sold for $50.58.

a) Write an equation for the jersey.

     Y= 40.47(1.249)^x/5

b) How much money would the jersey cost in 2007?

Y=40.47(1.249)^17/5

Y=40.47(2.12)

Y= $86.19

In 2007 the jersey would cost $86.19!

c) What year would it be when the jersey costs $146.96?

146.96=40.47(1.249)^x/5

146.96/40.47=(1.249)^x/5

3.63=1.249^x/5

log(1.249)3.63=x/5

(log3.63/log1.249)x5=X

1990+29=2019

In the year 2019 the jersey would cost $146.96.

Nice job Nicole, but be careful about your order of operations. All your exponents should have brackets. For example y=30(1.2)^x/5 is not the same as y=30(1.2)^(x/5).... the later is the one you want.
